Body, Mind
and Soul

A series of interactive works that turn an inner state into something the viewer controls: Emotional Weather, Emotion and Quattuor Scapes, made one after another between 2024 and 2025. The series takes its name from the theme the works were made for, Arebyte Gallery's 2023/24 programme The Body, The Mind, The Soul, funded by Arts Council England. Emotion was shown there in March 2024 and Quattuor Scapes at the same gallery in 2025.

Move slowly and the field settles around you; move quickly and it does not. Press to make it face you.

In each of these works, the viewer controls what is on screen.

  • Made all of the works: Emotional Weather and Emotion alone, Quattuor Scapes with a team
  • Wrote the wall text and designed the installation for my works in both Arebyte shows
  • Programmed the physics and control schemes myself, in Unity and Unreal Engine 5

My role

Artist; installation design and wall text for my works

Painters have used weather and landscape to carry feeling for centuries. In an interactive work the viewer is the one moving through the scene, so the feeling is tied to what they do. Each work in this series takes something interior (a mood, an emotion, a temperament) and builds it as a control the viewer uses.

The works were made in this order, and each builds on the one before. Emotional Weather lets the viewer control the weather in a painting. Emotion turns four emotions into four control schemes. Quattuor Scapes turns the four temperaments into four terrains.

Emotional Weather

The work
A real-time weather simulator in which ray-marched cloud, fog and rain are treated as brushwork. A canvas inside the scene holds Shishkin's Rain in an Oak Forest and the live render at once, and dissolves between them as the sky changes.
My part
Solo: design, programming and writing. The written study reads the scene through its images, sound, materials and interaction together, after Burn's multimodal analysis of games, and treats the meaning as completed by the viewer who sets the weather, after reader-response theory.
Status
Studio work and written study, made at UCL. Not exhibited.

Emotion

The work
Four emotions as four control schemes. Joy is a smooth walk, fear is a car that oversteers, anger is a plane that lags, sadness is a slowed body.
My part
Artist and programmer, solo. Wrote the wall text and designed the installation: double-sided screens, controllers on lit plinths, light structures that change colour with the level.
Outcome
Shown in Algorithmic Unconscious, a group exhibition at Arebyte Gallery, London, 1 to 3 March 2024, part of Arebyte's 2023/24 programme The Body, The Mind, The Soul. Alpha and beta tests before the show.

Quattuor Scapes

The work
The four temperaments become four terrains: a music festival, an office, a ballroom and a space station. There is no test or result; the visitor crosses all four and notices which one they move through most easily.
My part
Artist and technical director. Designed the four terrains, built the systems in Unreal Engine 5, wrote the wall text and designed the installation. With Uliana Sado, Tim Sang and Nika Varga.
Outcome
Shown in a group exhibition at Arebyte Gallery, London, 2025.

◆ Current work

From these works to AI.

These works deal with how an interface shapes how much of a person's intention gets through. My current work at USC on AI agents continues from them. Research page →
